The new BMW hybrid concept i8 now nearing production, and looking splendid in reality, has been unveiled in Frankfurt following its first preview back in 2009. It has some pretty impressive specs to offer, especially considering its hybrid nature. The i8 will be four-wheel-drive and will have a three-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol engine combined with a 184Ib ft electric motor at the heart of it that will produce 22bhp and 129bhp respectively. The petrol engine will be rear-mounted driving the rear wheels through the i8’s dual-clutch gearbox, while the electric motor will be mounted at the front to drive the wheels through a two-speed transmission.
All this gives the i8 the power to go from 0-62mph in just 4.6 seconds, with a limited top speed of 155mph. Despite this the i8 also has a brilliant fuel economy with combined fuel economy at 104mpg and CO2 emissions of 66g/km.
BMW even plans to revolutionise its dashboard layouts for the i8, using high-definition 3D readouts, even giving the driver a different colour to signify the different drive modes of the car.
The i8 is set to go on sale in 2013 and if it can live up to what BMW promises I don’t doubt that it is likely to be an instant hit, it looks great, it sounds great, now we’ll just have to wait for it to go into production to see if it IS great .
