Today and tomorrow are the press days for the 2012 Chicago Auto Show, and we know that you guys will be gagging at the bit for a chance to see what exciting cars are on the table. Of course, we’ve already had Detroit… so what’s currently setting Chicago apart?
Well, the concepts aren’t quite as futuristic as the Detroit ones – these are more about the brands showing their likely future models. So, whilst Detroit saw the Honda (Acura) NSX, Chicago sees the Acura ILX, which we are unsure will see light over this side of the pond as a Honda model. Anyway, it’s kind of luxurious, and kind of boring. ‘Nuf said.
Cadillac are perhaps more interesting, although they are sticking with their general levels of ridiculousness. The (ugly but strangely appealing) Ciel concept is a Cabernet red wine convertible on 22-inch rims and tires. Underneath the (utterly ostentatious) hood is a twin-turbocharged version of the 3.6-liter Direct Injection V6 engine, paired with a hybrid system using lithium-ion battery technology and a new hybrid transmission with low-speed all-electric drive. It is, in short, the most American a car can be, and it is with some reluctance that I admit to kind of wanting a go in it…
More interesting for me (as a secret-yet-not-so-secret) Volvo lover, is the Volvo You concept. This one is a sleeker shape than we are used too with current Volvo saloons, with a coupe shape that is actually really quite attractive. From a purely aesthetic point of view it’s a shame to see yet more dull and boring Volvo-blue, but what’s a girl to do?! Paired with the Scandinavian looks is a four-cylinder engine that drives the front wheels and Flywheel KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) linked to the rear axle. Add in 8-Speed Automatic transmission and we’re laughing.
They’re our concept picks so far – what are you looking forward to seeing in Chicago?
