Electric Cars | What Noises Should They Make When Approaching Pedestrians?

Post image of Electric Cars | What Noises Should They Make When Approaching Pedestrians?

Legislation will soon require all electric vehicles to have sound generators that warn pedestrians when they are approaching, because electric cars are generally so silent. Whereas a normal car obviously has an engine that makes a noise as they drive along, electric vehicles tend fo me more to the purring variety, the only sounds really being the sound of the wheels turning against the ground.

Now, this legislation could easily be the topic for a serious blog post, about how to make affordable sound generation technology for cars at specific times – but instead, we thought we would feature the noises we wish electric cars would have to make…

1. Buzzing

Buzzing Bee

Bzzzz...

How annoying would this be? There you are, walking down the road, when all of a sudden you hear the buzzing of a swarm of bees flying straight at you. The reactions of the general public would be hilarious, and I can guarantee it will mean they get out of the way – even if they can’y work out what is making the noise!

2. Spoken warning

You know that strange robotic reversing voice that some vans and lorries use? You know, the one that goes “WARNING! THIS VEHICLE IS REVERSING!”? Well, now imagine that one all  electric cars, except it is saying “WARNING! THIS VEHICLE IS APPROACHING!”. And every car will have a different voice. At different pitches and different speeds. It will be AWESOME.

3. The sound of the sea

Waves crashing on the shore

Splash...

From a thoroughly jarring noise to one designed to warn you simply. The soothing sound of the ocean, waves lapping on the shore, whenever an electric car approaches a pedestrian. This one may have the unfortunate effect of making pedestrians need the loo, however.

Can you think of any other potential noises for electric cars to make?

    This is a fantastic idea!
I love the idea of the buzzing noise, this would certainly encourage me to get an electric car if every time I slowed down near pedestrians they were in shock wondering where the bees were coming from, also love the “vehicle is approaching” idea you could input celebrities voices like a Sat-nav! Could you imagine having someone like The Prince of Darkness Ozzie Osbourne!

Great, just what we need, more noise. How about pedestrians LOOKING where they are going?

I think i like also the buzz. This will help also to lessen road accidents and inform people that a vehicle is coming when they buzz. And also people will be aware when a car is coming even if they are not buzzing.

I would think the sound of a normal car would be best.

There seems to be a great debate around this at the moment. I think recreating the same sound of existing cars makes sense. It is what people are used too. It would be great to see electric cars rolled out more widely.

This post really shows the worst point of electronic cars. And they really makes noise. After the charging problem, it’s the second major issue of the Electronic cars. Thanks for sharing some exceptional thing about it.

I want my Prius (in electric mode) to sound like a sports tuned 800 hp 1969 Dodge Charger…! :-))

I have never seriously thought about that! I like the idea of pedestrians being more alert and aware of their surroundings. Stop burying their faces in their phones or tablets.
Maybe the cars could have the burbling sound of the vehicles on The Jetsons.
