The Škoda Superb Estate Elegance 2.0 TDI CR has claimed the award for best Towcar of the Year for 2011 from the Caravan Club. A panel of 10 judges decided on the Škoda being the best out of 35 competitors.
This is the third time that Škoda have claimed this title with the Superb, following similar victories in 2003 and 2009. Although this award doesn’t do anything for the image of Škoda, it does prove the practicality of the family estate.
The Superb was first introduced as hatchback in 2002, although recently the estate version has joined the Škoda line up. The Superb Estate is able to compete against some of the more established names in this market segment, for example the Volvo V70.
Winning this title in the £25,000 – £32,000 class award wasn’t a foregone conclusion, as it was one of the most closely-fought classes in recent years. Ford’s Mondeo Titanium X Sport estate nearly took the title, however, that was closely followed by another Superb Estate, this time the 1.8 TSI variant.
The Caravan Club Towcar Competition is an annual event that has been running for the past 28 years, and is held in Bedfordshire. The Towcar awards are handed out across all categories of cars. Previous winners of the award include the Audi A6 Avant back in 1999, the Kia Sorento in 2006 and the Volkswagen Golf SE that took the title last year.
A Škoda Superb estate can be yours for a relatively cheap price, ranging from £17,720 for the basic model, right the way up to £29,420 for the most equipped model.
