Terrafugia may sounds like the title of a strange sci-fi film, but it actually the name of a fun and kind of silly car/plane as produced by a group of what simply has to be honest-to-god geeks. Don’t take this as an insult – the world has dreamt about cars that can fly for over half a century now, and only the truly brainy and technical minded could have the audacity to actually make it happen. The future has arrived, albeit not quite in the sexy style those eighties sci-fi films envisaged.
So, what is the Transition® (the latest concept from Terrafugia)? Well, at first glance is it a little plane, with the expected wings and cockpit. However, when on a road surface you have the option to fold up those wings and use it as a car. You still need a runway of course, and I hope there isn’t the option to fold up the wings when you are up in the air, but it definitely gives the potential to both fly and drive. To quote the guys that make it:
The Transition® combines the unique convenience of being able to fold its wings with the ability to drive on any surface road in a modern personal airplane platform. Stowing the wings for road use and deploying them for flight at the airport is activated from inside the cockpit. This unique functionality addresses head-on the issues faced by today’s Private and Sport Pilots.
